The 5 Second Rule to end procrastination

Getting up well is of vital importance to starting the day positively. A year has only one New Year’s Day, and a day contains only one moment when we awaken. Waking up in the right way is key to making the most of your day, and ending the bad habit of procrastination.

At MaArtial, we believe that we should jump straight out of bed with a resolve to make the best of the day ahead. Try to get into the habit of coming wide awake, kicking back the covers and getting up quickly to take a shower, hot or cold – or both!

We agree with Koichi Tohei, the founder of Ki-Aikido, who states in his book Ki in Daily Life:

The important thing – especially for young people who plan to start developing for the future – is to awaken in the morning, clear your head of the fantasies that come in the night, leap up and face the day with the positive attitude of “I’m going to do my best today.”

The 5 Second Rule to end procrastination

Many people have procrastination problems, which are not only connected to waking up. Goals and dreams are often put off until the last minute or not done at all.

Mel Robbins, a life coach in the USA, became famous for her cure for procrastination: the 5-Second Rule.

Key to the 5 Second Rule is understanding that an impulse – the impetus to getting something done – only lasts for about five seconds. Putting an impulse away for more than five seconds can result in putting it away for good.

Robbins’ solution to procrastination is the ‘5, 4, 3, 2, 1 do it’ method.

She simply suggests that the best way to overcome procrastination is to count backwards from five, and then just do just do whatever you have to. She cites scientific evidence to back up her claims, too.

Use these tips to stop procrastinating and make the most out of every day:

– As soon as you awaken, get out of bed, and take a shower to face the day.

– Act on your immediate impulses by counting backwards from 5 and then doing whatever has to be done.

– Use music or a scene from a film to inspire you at the start of the day.

– A new day is like one more round in boxing. Just go one more round daily.

Finally, take some advice from Roman emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius:“At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: ‘I have to go to work — as a human being. What do I have to complain of, if I’m going to do what I was born for — the things I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?”Awaken the Martial spirit!
